Wild animal tee shirts

I am learning to sketch a wild animal and transfer my drawing to a tee shirt.  I used special fabric markers to colour in my design.

Number line subtraction

I am learning to use a number line to help solve subtraction problems to 20.

"I can count backwards to work out subtraction problems.  I put the biggest number first.
Sometimes I can do it in my head" said Tyler

Reading out loud

We are learning to read familiar poems out loud. We are trying to read with fluency and expression. As we get more confident, we can pay attention to the author's punctuation to help our reading sound more interesting.

"I can sound out words I don't know when I read out loud. I can read loudly so everyone can hear" said Tyler

Wonderful writing

At writing time we are learning to experiment with new types of punctuation. We are starting to read our stories back and check we have fullstops and capital letters in the correct places. We are asking learning to be resilient and keep on trying.

"I am better because I know more reading stuff and I can do long sentences. I know letters and words now."

Reading strategies

I am learning to use the reading strategies I have been taught. The Reading Eggs programme supports my learning.

Rocket ship

We have been learning about the solar system this term.  We made a rocket with paper and a straw then blew through the straw to see how far our rocket would travel.  

Maths Challenges

We have been measuring lots of different things. One of the activities was to learn to use different non-standard units for measuring with. We were learning to have an accurate starting and finishing point when we measured.

"I had to remember to put the paper clips together or it won't work. I liked to measure things."

I'm on Phonics Fire!

Phonics lessons are a very important part of our Writing programme.

As I get more confident I try tricker things. In this photo I listened to a dictated sentence and then tried to write down what I heard and put in the correct punctuation. 

"I can do great writing, but I keep forgetting my finger spaces. I can remember for next time."

Compound words

I am learning to recognise and read compound words. I know that compound words are made of two little words.

"A compound word is 2 little words joined together to make one big word." said Tyler

Maths Fun

Owl Babies

We are learning to publish our writing for an audience, because we are authors. In Room 3 we try to present our work in many different and interesting ways to encourage people to come and read our fabulous stories!

" I am proud of my work."

Matariki

Our classroom celebrated Matariki, which is the Maori New Year. We came to school in our pyjamas and had a yummy breakfast together! It is great to share time with our whanau.

"Lincoln came to school with his pyjama's and so did I. My Mum was helping so much. I liked to have my breakfast at school. I liked to have lots of the marshmallows." 

Beginning and end sounds

I am learning to look at the first and last sounds in words to help me work out new words.

"I can look at the first and last sounds because it helps me" said Tyler

Story Writing

We are learning to write down our ideas and draw a picture to match.

In the beginning .....                                               and now!

"I like the last story because I know how to do finger spaces now. It is tricky doing quality work." said Tyler

Groupings with 5

I am learning to know the sum of 5 and any other number to 5.  I know to start with 5 in my head and count on.   I am able to do this without help from materials.

" I can put 5 in my head and then count on to the number on the dice." said Tyler

Tread Lightly Caravan visit

The Tread lightly Caravan visit was teaching us that the environment is everything around us in nature and that the environment is really important for us to live (trees for oxygen, water to drink, plants for food etc.) so we need to look after it.

"I am using the magnifying glass to look at lots of things. I spied a starfish and some rubbish. The rubbish is not good in the sand."

Wiggly Worms

We were learning about our Worm farm and how to look after it. All the leftover fruit and vegetables in the worm bucket feeds the worms. 

Tyler said, "I can touch the worms. Tiger worms are cold."
